All about Egypt - The land of Pharaohs

Egypt is a country that links the northeast of Africa to the Middle East. It is considered by many to be a Middle Eastern country partly because the main religion is Islam and the main spoken language is Egyptian Arabic. It is also a member of the Arab League.

The capital city is Cairo which is the largest city throughout the Arab nations. Royal mummies and gilded King Tutankhamun artifacts can be found in Cairo at the Egyptian Museum.

Hurghada has the best sandy beaches in Egypt. Giftun Island is famous for its white sandy beaches and reef. Egypt has coastlines on the Mediterranean Sea, the River Nile, and the Red Sea. Libya is to the west, the Gaza Strip to the northeast, Israel to the east and Sudan to the south. Sharm el-Sheikh is resort town between the desert of the Sinai Peninsula and the Red Sea. It is also known for its sandy beaches, coral reefs and clear waters.

The Egyptians invented the 365-days a year calendar to predict the yearly flooding of the Nile River. They also invented paper and ink, cosmetics, the toothbrush, and toothpaste. The ancient Egyptians used script known today as hieroglyphs (Greek for "sacred words") for almost 4,000 years. They wrote on tablets or walls, and on a type of paper called papyrus. Papyrus paper was made from a tall reed like plant. Hieroglyphics were carved or painted by the priests and scribes and were pictures.

Egypt is well known for its famous pyramids. The stones of the pyramids were heavier than elephants. Egyptian pyramids were built to preserve tombs for Pharaohs and not the general population. The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the seven wonders of the world. It was built for Pharaoh Khufu of the eighth dynasty. The ancient Egyptians had a very strong belief in the afterlife and thought the dead would continue to live as they had on earth. Cats were very special in ancient Egypt. Egyptians believed cats were magical creatures, capable of bringing good luck to the people who housed them. The Great Sphinx represents the shape of a lion-like creature with the body of an animal and the head of an Egyptian king located above the Giza Plateau, looking eastward in the direction of Sinai.
